| Jacob Obrist was born in Pennsylvania in 1833, son of John
and Ann Obrist of Switzerland and Pennsylvania respectively. He came to
Oregon in 1883, settling on Dutch Flat. The Nelsons and Crittendens were
the only other two families there at that time.
Jacob Obrist married Ellen Kirkham in Missouri and their children were: William; Frances A., who married Sarah Morgan and had Ellsworth and Leona (Mrs. Earl Lash); Harry, who married Florence Spence and had Jacob and Dale; Charlie, who married Mary Brown and had Wilman and Edwin; John, who married Emma Craig and had a son Vernon who was Wasco County Commissioner; and Mary and Jacob, both single.

Thomas Gray was born in Missouri, son of Yancy Alexander
Gray, and came west to Salem by covered wagon in the late 1860s. Here he
received his education.
The family later became the first settlers near Hardman, in Morrow county and in 1876 moved to the 5-mile ranch home near the upper 5-mile or Gray school house which was established in 1885. He married Margaret Jeffers, daughter of Wilson John and Louise (Hays) Jeffers, Jeffers was a Civil and Mexican war veteran of The Dalles, who worked for the Oregon Steam Navigation Co. (1879), building boats in The Dalles and later as a carpenter for the O.R. & N. Co. railroad shops. Children of Thomas and Margaret (Jeffers) Gray were: Thomas and Cecil of Astoria; Lloyd of Portland; George of Maupin; Martha (Mrs. Julius Klint) of The Dalles; Pearl (Mrs. Emerson Burtner) of Dufur and Clarence, who occupies the old 5-mile home place which had been in the family for 76 years as of 1952.
