OREGON BANKING INSTITUTIONS TO REMAIN
CLOSED FOR FIVE DAYS
No Cause for Alarm So Far as Local Banks
are Concerned
From Tuesday’s Daily:
Governor George E. Chamberlain at
the request of a delegation of Portland bankers issued a proclamation declaring
five business holidays
in all banks in Oregon, the order to take
effect this morning. Accordingly people of The Dalles wishing to transact
business with the banks today were met by closed doors, upon which the
governor’s proclamation was posted…
Local Banks Are Safe
In answer to a query this afternoon regarding
the local money condition, J. C. Hostetler, cashier of French &
Co. bankers representing the two banks of the city, and after a consultation
with J. S. Schenck, president of the First National, said that the
local banking institutions were never in better condition than at present.
“If it were possible,” said Mr. Hostetler, to get money from Portland to
the extent of our resources, we could pay out two for one easily. However,
we can do nothing in the present case but abide by the Governor’s proclamation.
There is positively no cause for alarm so
far as local banks are concerned.” In referring to the excellent crops
and the high prices of
farm products, Mr. Hostetler said that the
people of Oregon had every cause to be optimistic as there will be plenty
of money so soon as the
amount that is now out taking care of the
crops is again brought into the banks.

BITTEN BY VICIOUS DOG
Ed Smith of the Pacific States telephone
company was bitten on the right hand by a vicious dog Saturday while he
was trying to separate two beligerant canines which were fighting. The
dog biting him, belongs to E. H. Sargent and is the same one that
bit at Lee Putman who met his
death at that time in front of the shooting
gallery on Court street last May.
FINE OREGON FIR
President of The Rock Island Railroad
Says Fir Is Finest He Ever Saw
President B. L. Winchell of the Rock
Island railroad system was in the city a short time Saturday, coming from
Portland in his special car
accompanied by his wife and several friends.
The car was attached to the Spokane Flyer Saturday night.
Mr. Winchell saw the furniture at the Portland
Commercial club which is of selected Oregon fir. He says he will hereafter
have all the furniture
of his passenger coaches made of Oregon
fir, and that if E. H. Harriman is not careful “he will be beaten
in the race of procuring fine Oregon
fir for coach finishing.” Mr. Winchell says
further that the “Oregon fir is the finest he ever saw for interior finishing.”
President Winchell and party have been touring
the west and are on their way east. |
