Wasco County
Lookups & Kind Souls

Your Pot of Gold at the Middle of the Rainbow

In the spirit of sharing and helping fellow family historians, the Kind Souls named below offer you their assistance. They have to abide by copyright laws and their time is limited, of course, so it will be appreciated if you follow a few simple rules. These are pretty typical rules at any lookup site:

1) Mind your manners, even if there is a delay in answering your request. Most anything can happen, from family emergencies to malfunctioning email service, so please keep that in mind. We're just regular people, with regular lives. Stuff happens.

2) Follow the 10-minute rule: Please limit your requests to a number and type that could probably be handled in 10 minutes or less if requesting a lookup from a book or CD. Just follow the 10-minute rule and everyone will stay happy. If you have more requests than that, tell the volunteer and let him/her lay their own ground rules about frequency of submissions -- or perhaps he/she will have enough spare time at the moment to okay having you send another request at that time.

3) The KISS Principle (Keep It Simple, Sweetie): Due to copyright restrictions, please avoid asking for large sections of data or "all Smiths" types of requests. If there's a ton of data  about your ancestor in any particular book, the lookup volunteer can help you try to locate your own copy of that publication.

4) KSEs (Kind Soul Expenses): If requesting a cemetery photo or other lookup that requires out of pocket expense on the part of the Kind Soul, please make it clear at the time of your request that you expect to pay those costs. That will make for much less chance of there being a misunderstanding. Volunteers here are not allowed to accept any money over the amount of their expenses, but you should make it easy for them to receive reimbursement of any actual expenses.

5) Be specific. If you want to know who is buried in the next 5 plots on either side, for example, please make that clear when you make the request for information.

6) Payback: All we ask in return for these favors is that you pass the kindness along to someone who will be needing help where you live or from your printed resources.  We're all doing this because others have helped us in similar ways. The genealogy community has more Kind Souls in it than any other group of people, and we'd like to see it stay that way.  :-)

DONATION LAND CLAIMS (DLCs) -- all books. A very valuable resource, the DLCs are not limited to information about the original land claims allotted to early settlers, but also give details about the claimant's place of birth and often name family members or other valuable information. Since women were also granted land during this period, this is often the only resource available that can confirm the existence or the marriage of a pioneer woman.
