| Ancestor name: William GARWOOD
Settlement Area: The Dalles
Facts and Info: I am researching the
Garwood family in the counties of Washington, Multnomah, Polk, Douglas,Jackson,
Union and Skamania.
I have a great deal of research
for the family here in Oregon but have a couple spots where some help would
be appreciated. Namely the parents of Louisa Eaton
who married William Garwood in Washington County 24 Dec 1874. Also the
place of death of William's father also named William. The senior William
was married to Maria Humphreys and
Hannah Culbertson nee Humphreys. William
is in Wasco County in 1880 at Falls Precinct, which I beleive is near Hood
River. |

A fine example of a "double"
cabin. The owner of this cabin surely would have been proud of this extra-large
home, and for good reason. Few pioneers could afford such a large home,
no matter how large the family. A "double" offered many creature comforts
not found in the average home: usually two fireplaces or access to a single
fireplace from both rooms of the house, separate sleeping quarters from
the main living area & more.

Ancestor Name: John Wesley MATLOCK
Facts and Info: In my possession I
have a photograph of my great-grandfather, John Wesley Matlock with his
wife and 2 of his
children dated about 1884 taken by Gilhousen
G. Narden in The Dalles, OR. His
son and my grandfather, John Perry Matlock, not pictured in the photo,
was born in St. Joseph, MO on 6 Jun 1868. There is also another child,
Violet, who married Robert Williams
and their family is in The Dalles, Wasco County census of 1900. I
would like any information on John Wesley Matlock.
It is my understanding he came
from MO to OR, but I don't know when. I know for sure he moved from
Wasco County before 1912 because he lived in Florida at that time.
His wife, Genevieve (Jennie) Moore Matlock
died 7 Jan 1904 I presume in The Dalles, OR, but I have no proof. It is
also my understanding that he left OR after the death of his wife, leaving
his daughter to take care of the younger children. The 2 children
pictured with my great-grandfather are Rufus, born in 1880 and Daisy Ella
born 1877, my great uncle and great aunt respectively. Daisy married
Thomas Jefferson Smith and moved to Portland,
OR where she died in Sep 1972.
My great- grandfather was a
Union Vet and member of the GAR by looking at the medal he is wearing on
his lapel in the photograph. Any information on any of my relatives
mentioned above, especially John Wesley Matlock, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. J. Cooper |

This rig was known as a "chuckwagon"
back in the wagon days. Today's mobile lunch trucks are patterned after
the chuckwagon, complete with foldout sections to provide extra room for
cooking and serving!

| Ancestor Name: James J.GRAY
Settlement Area: Juniper Flat, Victor
Facts and Info: Arrived in Wasco Co.
in the early 1870s. Married Susan P. HURST
November 1, 1876 in The Dalles. We are uncertain of his parentage, as there
is a story he told that doesn't add up in all directions. He claimed to
have been born in Nashville (Tennessee has been assumed) March 17, 1843
and left home under strange circumstances. We would like to make contact
with all other Grays from the Wasco Co. area to compare notes, as his children
remember a woman coming to their house, saying she was his sister, which
he denied. James died in July of 1900, just a short distance from home,
as he and several hired hands were bringing home a brand new threshing
machine outfit that he had purchased on credit in The Dalles.
He's a big brick wall for us.

Facts and Info: James and Malinda
were married in Franklin Co., MO in November 1850 and set out for Oregon
the following spring. Malinda gave birth to their first child just a couple
of months after they arrived. They first lived in Linn Co., backtracking
to The Dalles about 1857, to settle near the beginning of the Barlow Road
where they had crossed on their way to Linn Co. They had 14 children. Other
families associated with and married to their offspring included: Sutherlands, McClures, Grays, Pattersons, Dickens'

the plains in 1851. |
